![]() ![]() Brotherhood is probably my favorite anime of all time, it's just so wonderful and I keep remembering individual moments that impacted me on an unexpected, emotional level.Ġ3 had better music and since it only focused on a small chunk of the manga it got to devote more time to the individual characters which is where a lot of the fandom's obsession with Nina (who only appears in one chapter of the manga) and Hughes probably comes from. I would say that the pacing slows a bit in Brotherhood during the Snow Fortress storyline but once they leave? Every single episode is riveting, "holy shit" moment after "holy shit" moment. "Brothers" from 2003 makes me teary eyed and "Full Metal Alchemist" from Brotherhood is a majestic, sweeping epic that gives me goosebumps. 2003 has some gorgeous endings and one of my favorite EDs in any series. I think Brotherhood has two of the best OPs in anime full stop, but the others miss for me. Rose and Izumi are borderline offensive to me in the 2003 series. Women characters treated better - The women in the original manga and by consequence Brotherhood, are given much more agency and importance to the overall story than how they were handled in 2003. Greed, Pride, Wrath and Envy - Without spoiling too much, these characters had fantastic arcs in Brotherhood and are part of what make me enjoy rewatching the series so much. I really admire the tidbits about Hohenheim and Father's separate journies. We're given powerful pieces and tidbits that prove their worth as the story progresses. The world building - learning the history of FMA's world is extremely rewarding and never feels like an info dump. I really can't say enough good things about characters like Roy, Greed, Izumi Curtis, Hohenheim. ![]() Brotherhood did a fantastic job of making each character's journey reach a satisfyingly conclusion while simultaneously showing us why they were so important to the resolution. Overall Final Arc - the final 10-15 episodes feel like a well-written symphony where every instrument gets a time to shine until each individual piece all come together for a grand, sweeping melody that allows each performer to get a grand finale while simultaneously being an essential part of the whole. It's one of the top 3 anime endings of all time. The Ending - I feel more strongly about this than almost any other argument for Brotherhood. Brotherhood is still generally considered the better series and it doesn't need a ton of defending. I will explain these if asked to, but I wanted to take the time to shout out what 2003 did well. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood/ FMA Manga > With a few rare exceptions (like Lust getting some background), side characters are minimized and peripheral to ensure that Ed & Al remain the sole focus of the storyline. 95% only focused on Ed & Al - It's easy to complain that Roy, Izumi, Rose, Winry, Hawkeye, Hohenheim and several other characters were either mishandled or tossed aside in the 2003 series but I would argue that their sacrifice was in the name of focusing the series on the relationship between the two brothers. Will most of it didn't work for me, there are some really cool concepts like the creation of the homunculi/how to defeat them. Creative Non-canon elements - honestly they swung really hard when they decided to forge ahead without the source material. While 2003 included some early filler and slowed down the pace, Brotherhood almost sped through these moments as if to assume you had already seen them. Early pacing / Hughes and Nina - these storylines didn't have the same level of impact in Brotherhood. Atmosphere - to my point earlier about the mood, the shading and color palette is much darker and less saturated, adding to the sad and slow tone that works so well in the 2003 series. I liked the dark and sad tone of 2003, it has such a dour mood that makes you care about the fate of the two brothers. Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 > Drama - The first 14 or so episodes in Brotherhood include a lot of manga-specific gag humor that didn't land for me.
